As the super-powered brand enters a new age, the top 10 DC movies of 2022 have been unveiled.
For Warner Bros. and its DC big-screen endeavors, 2022 was a successful year. While the blue brand (The Batman aside) did not produce as much or have the same level of commercial success as in the past, it did usher in new DC Studios leadership in the form of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Audiences are eagerly anticipating what will happen both inside (and outside) the costumed realm as a result of the new leadership at the top of the DC Universe (DCU).
DC’s Most Wanted Films
The Wrap reported on new data from Parrot Analytics that identified the top DC superhero movies for 2022.
Demand is determined by the amount of interest, participation, and viewing for each piece of material on social media platforms as well as “audience activity on informational sites like Wikipedia and free streaming services,” according to a global entertainment research business.
The indicator is the deviation from the average title’s demand expressed as a multiple of the average movie’s demand during the same period of time.
The complete list of the top 10 movies in DC for 2022 is as follows:
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 10.30x
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is ranked number ten. The frequently criticized Zack Snyder team-up movie pitted Henry Cavill’s Superman/Clark Kent against Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne/Batman. The 2016 film was still fresh in viewers’ minds despite being released almost seven years ago, generating 10.30 times greater demand than the Parrot Analytics Average.
Birds of Prey – 12.39x
2020’s Birds of Prey superhero movie was another classic title to appear on this list. One of the more famous DCEU adventures is the Harley Quinn solo tale. And of course, her movie was going to be among the top ten because huge personalities like Margot Robbie were vying for roles in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.
Man of Steel 12.42x
More than ten years after it first opened in theaters, Man of Steel The Best Superhero Movie has managed to maintain viewer interest. Due to the Henry Cavill return controversy and the highly publicized “will they, won’t they” game around a prospective Man of Steel 2 in the latter half of the year, the DCEU debut movie probably experienced increased interest in 2022.
The Best Superhero Movie Shazam! is on this list for the same reason that several other movies are. It’s because a sequel will be released very shortly. It makes fitting that the superhero comedy would be on this list given the character of Shazam’s close connection to the star of the sole DCEU film of 2022, Black Adam.
The 2018 film Aquaman is another DC Superhero movie that will soon get a sequel. Due to the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom later this year and the star Jason Momoa being one of Hollywood’s top names, there is a high degree of demand.
Joker is the first DC Elseworlds tale to appear here. The sequel to Todd Phillips’ realistic Gotham-based drama, Joker: Folie à Deux, would be released the following year. This movie is distinctive among its DC brethren since it appeals to both DC enthusiasts and audiences who may never consider exploring the blue brand. It is equally as well-known as Joker and its lead Joaquin Phoenix won Oscar glory at the 2020 Academy Awards.
Black Adam 23.04x
One would anticipate the Black Adam superhero movie, the lone theatrical release of the DCEU in 2022, to be on this type of list; yet, what’s intriguing is how it is defeated by three other films (two of which did not even come out last year). This is probably related to the fact that, despite the best efforts of its star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Black Adam is not exactly a household name at this moment.
The Suicide Squad 48.82x
The Suicide Squad’s superhero movie director is probably a big factor in why it became the third most sought-after DC film of 2022. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, made his DC debut with the movie, thus viewers were probably very interested to know who the new DC boss was. It also helps that the critically acclaimed movie had a similarly well-liked TV spin-off that aired last year in the Peacemaker movie with John Cena.
Wonder Woman 1984 -26.57x
Wonder Woman 1984 superhero movie appears to have maintained its popularity despite earning negative reviews back in December 2020, ranking second in Parrot’s data. This increased interest is likely due to discussions concerning the franchise’s future with star Gal Gadot and the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3.
The Batman 61.55x
Superhero The Batman, starring Matt Reeves, is perched atop the stack. The DC blockbuster became one of the most popular films of 2022 thanks to this fresh perspective on the world of the caped crusader, which held fans’ interest for much of last year. With the introduction of numerous spin-off projects after its release, The Batman was able to maintain its status in the media and attract 61.55 times more interest than the average movie according to Parrot Analytics.
Meaning of This Info for DC Moving forward
These figures make it clear why Warner Bros. wants to reimagine the DC universe for the big screen.
The Batman, two older DC films, and the DCEU’s lone new film of the year placed ahead of it in the rankings (a DC Elseworlds story taking place outside of the main DCU canon).
As the DCU enters a new chapter, it will be intriguing to see how these numbers develop throughout the ensuing year and the following few years.
Fans will be watching this time next year to see where, if anywhere, the four new DC blockbusters that will be released this year—Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, Aquaman, and the Lost Kingdom—fall on the list.
